Cocoa Farming Cocoa farming in Ghana dates back to the 18th century when an illustrious son of Ghana (then Gold Coast) brought cocoa from present day Equitorial Guinea (then Fernando Po) and engaged in commercial cocoa farming in 1879. Soon cocoa spread throughout the southern part of Ghana.
Ghana became the world’s leading producer of cocoa since early 1900 and only lost the position to Cote D’Ivore a few decades ago. Individual farmers who wish to enter into cocoa farming either acquire farmlands suitable for cocoa cultivation or use family lands that have been used for this purpose for a long time to do so. Once a person decides to enter into cocoa farming, Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), the regulator of the industry would make available planting materials through its Seed Production and Extension departments.
